Freedom of Information request Neurodevelopmental Diagnostic Conversion Rates (NHS vs. Right to Choose)

Response published: 16 June 2026

FOI Request

Dear FOI Team, Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please provide the following data regarding ADHD and Autism (ASD) diagnostic services within this ICB for the financial year 2025/26 (to date) [and 2024/25 if available]. If data is not held for this specific year, please provide the most recent period for which data is available or, as Bristol did (see below), their ‘current rate’. 1. Locally Commissioned NHS Services For your primary NHS-commissioned providers (Trust-led services), please provide the 'conversion rate' (the percentage of completed assessments that resulted in a formal diagnosis) for: a) Children & Young People (CYP) Autism b) Children & Young People (CYP) ADHD c) Adult Autism d) Adult ADHD 2. Right to Choose (RTC) / Independent Providers For assessments funded by the ICB via the 'Right to Choose' pathway, please provide the aggregate 'conversion rate' for: a) CYP Autism b) CYP ADHD c) Adult Autism d) Adult ADHD Note: If your records for RTC providers do not distinguish between age groups, please provide the total aggregate conversion rate for the condition regardless of age (e.g., Autism all-ages). 3. Raw Data: If a calculated percentage is not held, please provide the disaggregated raw volume data: a) Total number of diagnostic assessments completed. b) Total number of positive diagnoses issued. (Please provide this breakdown by Local NHS Providers vs. Independent/RTC Providers). This request follows findings from BNSSG ICB (FOI.ICB-2526/333) which revealed a significant disparity in conversion rates—circa 90% for RTC providers versus 30-50% in local services. I am seeking to determine if this is a consistent trend across other ICBs. My understanding is that the government mandated that ICBs should record diagnosis rates accurately from 2025, including the percentage of people assessed who received a diagnosis of ADHD and autism. All contracted providers under RTC are required to submit outcome-based coding (diagnoses and discharges) by Autumn 2025. Please provide this in an editable format (Excel/CSV). If you believe this request will exceed the cost limit, please contact me to discuss how the request can be refined (for example, by limiting it to a single financial year). Kind regards,
