Response published: 8 July 2026

FOI Request

Dear FoI Team, I am writing to request some information under the Freedom of Information act. I am requesting this information on behalf of Epilepsy Action, as we would like to understand the UK Epilepsy Specialist Nurse (ESN) workforce in order to better support the NHS to provide care to people with epilepsy. These questions are applicable to any Trust that provides neurology or learning disability care. Please answer all questions that are relevant to your trust, and mark those that are not relevant clearly as such with a reason (e.g. ‘Not applicable as we do not provide learning disability care’). For the purposes of this request, an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse is any registered nurse whose substantive role includes any one of: specialist epilepsy assessment, management, review, education, care coordination, prescribing, or advice for people with epilepsy. Please could you provide the following information: 1. Approximate number of patients accessing epilepsy care in your Trust in the last 12 months. 2. Total number of epilepsy specialist nurses (ESNs) employed within your Trust. Please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts. 2a. The number of ESNs which primarily serve an adult epilepsy population. Please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts. 2b. The number of ESNs which primarily serve a paediatric epilepsy population. Please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts. 2c. The number of ESNs which primarily serve an adult learning disability epilepsy population. Please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts. 2d. The number of ESNs which primarily serve a paediatric learning disability epilepsy population. Please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts. 3. The number of ESNs employed within your Trust operating in the following Agenda for Change bands (please provide headcount, FTE and number of vacant posts for each band): 3a. Band 4 3b. Band 5 3c. Band 6 3d. Band 7 3e. Band 8A 3f. Band 8B+ 4. Do ESN staff from your Trust provide services to patients registered with other NHS Trusts? (Yes/No) 4a. If yes, please estimate the proportion of ESN FTE time spent in other Trusts. 4b. If yes, please provide the name of the Trusts that services are provided to. Thank you for providing this information. I appreciate that gathering this information can be time consuming and sometimes it is difficult to uncover, so I have narrowed down the questions to only the most essential information. I am very grateful for your help in this, and if there is anything I can do to assist please do let me know. Many thanks
