Freedom of Information request Community Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy figures

Response published: 16 October 2026

FOI Request

Hello, I am a registered nurse researching a project around tracheostomy and laryngectomy education. I am hoping to understand how many people are living in the community with these needs. Please could you treat this as a Freedom of Information request and provide the most recent figures held by your trust for: • People living in the community with a tracheostomy in place. • People living in the community following a laryngectomy, with a permanent stoma. By community, I mean people living at home or in residential or nursing care, rather than hospital inpatients. I am looking for the number of people currently living with these conditions, rather than the number of procedures performed during a year. If available, please separate the figures into adults and children. Please count individuals rather than appointments or episodes of care. It would also be helpful to know: • The date the figures relate to. • The geographical area they cover. • Whether they include everyone in that area or only people known to your trust’s services. I am requesting anonymous totals only, with no patient-identifiable information. If your trust does not hold this information, any guidance on which organisation or service may hold it would be appreciated. Thank you for your help.
