Freedom of Information request Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support Training

Response published: 2 December 2025

FOI Request

I am an year 1 medical student working on a project about Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support readiness of medical professionals in the country. I would like to ask: 1. What is the required frequency for statutory BLS training? 2. What incentives or measures has the trust adopted to encourage annual BLS training for medical professionals with patient facing duties ( no pay progression if mandatory training not completed, departmental sessions, ESR alerts, managerial supervision of mandatory training etc)? 3. Does the organisation require resus teams to have Advanced Life Support training?

FOI Response

Freedom of Information Request – Ref: FOI 320-2025

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request. Please find our response below.

You asked:

1. What is the required frequency for statutory BLS training?

Our response:

Level 2 BLS is a mandatory requirement in GHC – eLearning annual update, practical assessment biannually.

You asked:

2. What incentives or measures has the trust adopted to encourage annual BLS training for medical professionals with patient facing duties ( no pay progression if mandatory training not completed, departmental sessions, ESR alerts, managerial supervision of mandatory training etc)?

Our response:

In Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust BLS Resuscitation training is a mandatory requirement for all patient facing staff (including all medical professionals).

You asked:

3. Does the organisation require resus teams to have Advanced Life Support training?

Our response:

Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust is a Community/Mental Health/Learning Disability Trust and not an Acute Hospital. (Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust does not have medical staff on site 24/7).

Community hospitals and Inpatient areas are nurse led and do not have access to a dedicated on-site resuscitation team.

The local on-site emergency response teams are registered nurses/AHPS & HCAs and for all these staff Level 3 Resus is mandatory/annual update.
