FOI Response

Freedom of Information Request – Ref: FOI 472-2023
Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request. Please find our response below.
1. What senior staffing structure do you have in place to cover your inpatient mental health units on
a. a night and
b. a weekend
2. How many units and sites does this structure cover?
A clinical on-call system is in operation and provides immediate advice and support for our 4 inpatient mental health and LD sites. This system ensures access to a senior clinician on all during the hours of 17:00 – 08:00 every weekday and also around the clock throughout the weekend. We have the following medical staffing OOH.
Junior/training grade either Foundation year 2, GP Trainee or Psychiatry Core Trainee.:
Weekdays 5pm-9am we have one Junior doctor resident but covering the inpatient sites at WLH, CLH and Recovery Unit. not the same person, changes at 9pm to a night shift.
Weekends and BH we have 2 juniors covering 9am-5pm and 1 junior 5pm-9am. Resident but across the 3 sites.
Consultant:
We run a non-resident on call 24/7. There are 2 consultants, a 1st on call and a ‘backup’ 2nd on-call. The 1st and 2nd on-call swap over after 12 hours so the consultant would be 1st on 9am-9pm and 2nd on 9pm-9am and vice versa.
Middle Tier:
We also have a senior trainee ST4-6. on call 5pm-9am OOH weekdays, weekends or BH, but due to trainee numbers this operates on only 30-40% of OOH shifts across the year.
