Freedom of Information Request – Ref: FOI 347-2024
Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request. Please find our response below.
Please provide the following information in full for the years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023.
Please note that I use the term ‘borderline personality disorder’ but would also like stats for ’emotionally
unstable personality disorder’ if that is the diagnostic term that your trust uses..
2. How much funding is received for the care of borderline personality disorder and how is this money
spent?
We are not aware of a specific borderline personality disorder income line so we do not believe we can
calculate the spend.
3. How many adult patients are there within the trust with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder?
Calendar Year Number of Patients
2019 362
2020 274
2021 264
2022 272
2023 259
Patients may be counted more than once if they are on a caseload for more than one year.
5. How much does it cost the trust per year to provide medication to adults diagnosed with
borderline personality disorder?
It would very much depend on the medication, not all patients with BPD will have medication so we
could not give a definitive answer unless we knew the specific medication.
6. How many patients/service users with borderline personality disorder require in-patient care?
Calendar Year Number of Patients
2019 109
2020 80
2021 70
2022 79
2023 46
Patients may be counted more than once if they had more than one inpatient stay.
7. How much does it cost the trust to facilitate this in-patient care?
Cost to facilitate in-patient care for patient cohort 22/23. equals £2.9mil
Information sourced from 22/23 National Cost Collection therefore subject to associated
guidance and standards.
Quoted cost is fully absorbed cost of patient cohort including all direct, indirect and associated
overhead costs of running inpatient services.
Due to unforeseen system outage we are currently unable to provide information for any of the
other years requested
9. How many suicides of patients with borderline personality disorder have there been each year?
Due to lack of capacity within the team, we will respond to this question in February, apologies.
