National reports can be requested from ECTAS at the Royal college of Psychiatrists. There are
no internal reports or investigations available.
4.How many ECT in 2022?
15 patients had ECT in 2022.
5.What proportion of patients were men/women?
60% men and 40% women.
6.How old were they?
82,63,77, 36,72, 73, 64, 77, 77, 76, 61, 54, 85, 93, 59
7.What proportion of patients were classified people of the global majority or racialised
communities POC / BAME.?
All white British apart from 1 female classified as White other.
8.How many were receiving ECT for the first time?
6 patients had treatment for the first time.
9.How many patients consented to ECT?
At the start of the course of treatment 64% had capacity to consent to treatment and towards
the end of the course of the treatments 71% had capacity to consent to treatment.
10.How many ECT complaints were investigated outside the NHS and CCG?
There were no complaints, investigations or serious incidents relating to ECT.
11.How many patients died during or 1 month after ECT and what was the cause whether or
not ECT was considered the cause.?
One patient suicide. This patient had a severe depression and chose to discontinue ECT
treatment early believing it would not help
12.How many patients died within 6 months after ECT and what was the cause whether or not
ECT was considered the cause.?

14.How many patients have suffered complications during and after ECT and what were those
complications?
Two patients had treatments stopped anaesthetic risk unacceptable for one and the other had
short term memory / confusion challenges which outweighed psychiatric benefit for mental
health.
15.Have there been any formal complaints from patients/relatives about ECT?
No
16.If so, what was their concerns?
17.How many patients report memory loss/loss of cognitive function?
21% noted occasional lapses of memory.
18.What tests are used to assess memory loss/loss of cognitive function?
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment
19.Have MRI or CT scans been used before and after ECT?
These are generally not required as part of ECT treatment unless part of a research project.
but are sometimes used by other departments who are examining organic changes in the
brain.

The Trust does not have plans to prevent ECT in the future
